2018 - THE YEAR IN REVIEW

 

2018 was an exciting year for AOM!

 

The 78th Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management, held in Chicago, saw a record number of attendees. As a direct result of member feedback, the was launched through two 2018 conferences. Big Data and Managing in a Digital Economy welcomed 400 attendees to Surrey, UK, in April, and From Start-up to Scale-up drew 350 registrants to Tel Aviv, Israel, in December.

 

found a home on a dynamic and exciting new platform, and the journal editorial teams hosted many Paper and Idea Development Workshops around the globe, with many more on tap for 2019. This year the AOM developed AOM Insights, an online magazine for management and business leaders built on AOM journal content. , the AOM’s new interactive online community platform, is now helping facilitate connections, idea sharing, and collaboration across a growing population of Division and Interest Groups and AOM Conference attendees.

 

Most recently, a new was launched, which will be supported through enhanced services at the onsite Career Center at the Annual Meeting in Boston.

 

A LOOK BACK AT 2018

ANNUAL MEETING

#AOM2018 in Chicago welcomed a record number of attendees and received the highest amount of submissions since 2015's Vancouver conference:

#AOM2019 is well on its way to meeting those numbers with over 9,000 submissions received.

 

 

, our online magazine for management and business leaders built primarily upon AOM journal content, has been well-received among journal authors, who recognize its value in promoting their work among practitioners and media. Since its launch to members at the Annual Meeting in Chicago, Insights has featured 71 summaries, 6 infographics, and 24 whiteboard videos within 6 topics: Leadership, Innovation, Motivation, Diversity, Behavior, and Policy. The is updated on a weekly basis, and new summaries and infographics are added monthly.

 

Many authors have praised Insights’ value as a teaching resource, offering summaries of journal articles and related infographics on management topics that can be used in the classroom setting. Authors are also sharing links to Insights summaries of their journal articles on social media.

The Academy of Management’s Journals were fully engaged with members, authors, and volunteers in 2018, holding many Paper and Idea Development Workshops around the world - in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America. This year promises to be just as exciting for prospective authors, with multiple workshops scheduled for 2019. Please for more information about these upcoming publications events!

 

Historically, the Academy has been helping advance careers through opportunities at our Annual Meeting by connecting employers to the brightest, most qualified candidates and providing job seekers with access to the most prestigious academic opportunities!

 

Chicago 2018 was a banner year, with over 120 recruiters conducting over 3,500 interviews at our . We look forward to expanding opportunities in Boston 2019 with more formal coaching, mock interviews, CV review, networking space, etc. We hope you’ll join us!

 

 

BIG DATA AND MANAGING IN A DIGITAL ECONOMY

The AOM Specialized Conference on Big Data and Managing in a Digital Economy was held at the University of Surrey from April 18-20, 2018. In relation to AOM’s goals for the Specialized Conference Initiative, the Big Data conference was a resounding success. The conference had over 400 submissions, 388 participants from 36 countries, a series of tutorials and active learning workshops, an exciting program, three inspiring keynotes, and a gala dinner at the Surrey Cathedral. It was a successful launch for our new initiative!

FROM START-UP TO SCALE-UP: Coping with Organizational Challenges in a Volatile Business Environment

The AOM’s second Specialized Conference was held in Tel Aviv, Israel - what some refer to as the ‘Startup Nation’ - from December 17-19, 2018. There were a total of 359 submissions, 69 scheduled sessions and events, and 347 conference registrants from over 30 countries. During this conference, scholars from a wide range of management disciplines, as well as industry experts, strategists, entrepreneurs, venture capital experts, and policy makers, engaged in sessions designed to enable dialogue toward understanding the multifaceted, complex trajectory from start-up to scale-up.
