Call for Scholarly Program Submissions: Organizational Communication and Information Systems (OCIS)

Specific Domain: OCIS promotes an interdisciplinary approach to further the understanding of the behavioral, social, and economic processes at the intersection of communication, technology, and organizing. It constitutes a vibrant, inclusive, and intellectually stimulating community, open to scholars from a wide range of disciplines, theoretical frameworks, and research methods who are conducting cutting-edge research based on rigorous and creative scholarship. Major topics of interest include: digital transformation, digital platforms, virtual and distributed work, knowledge and innovation processes, crowdsourcing and crowdfunding, technology and the changing nature of work, organizational design and strategy, IT policy and impacts, information privacy and ethics, online communities, and organizational communication networks. OCIS: Come for the research, stay for the network!

Special Instructions: OCIS invites the submission of innovative empirical or conceptual papers and symposia on all themes of interest to the Academy that touch on information systems and/or organizational communication. Topics that are oriented to the 2020 All-Academy theme of "20/20: Broadening our Sight” are especially encouraged. This year's theme encourages research that moves beyond dichotomies and focuses on the creation of synergies and value at all levels of analysis – individual, team, organizational, and society.  It specifically asks how we can overcome barriers that may prevent us from creating and sharing knowledge that creates value.  What roles do digital technology and communication play in these processes and activities?  Topics of interest include but are not limited to: technological advances and the gig economy, digital technologies and their impacts on participatory organizational processes and structures, intergroup dynamics in online contexts, how digital innovation contributes to inclusive business approaches, and how sharing platforms contribute to access to information and resources. OCIS welcomes management, organization, communication, and information systems scholars who rely upon a broad range of theoretical perspectives, research methods, and data. 

Division Awards:   Division awards will be given for best program paper, best interactive paper, best student paper and best reviewer. The Gerardine DeSanctis Dissertation Award will also be presented at the 2020 meeting. The award, inaugurated by the OCIS division at the 2007 Annual Meeting, is open to solo-authored papers based on a dissertation completed within the past three years (see the OCIS Division website for more details). The winner of the DeSanctis Award will be automatically nominated for the Academy-wide William H. Newman Award. The OCIS Division will also nominate one paper for the Academy-wide Carolyn Dexter Best International Paper Award (see the Orientation and Awards section in the submission guidelines for more details). In addition to these program-related awards, an award will be given for the best paper published by an OCIS member during 2019. Finally, the division may award one or more Lifetime Service awards.
