Call for Scholarly Program Submissions: Technology & Innovation Management

The Technology and Innovation Management (TIM) Division encourages interdisciplinary scholarship and dialogue on the management of innovation and technological change from a variety of perspectives including behavioral, cognitive, sociological, and economic approaches.

The theme of this year's meeting is “20/20: Broadening our Sight.” The call is for us to broaden our sights to acknowledge and integrate across self-imposed dichotomies in theoretical, methodological, and operational approaches so as to better address the pressing challenges faced by society. This focus is highly relevant for TIM-related research as technology and innovation have played a central role in the emergence of many of these challenges and, in turn, will be crucial in developing solutions to these challenges.  For example, invention and innovation have spurred numerous industrial advances that have enhanced consumer welfare and firm economic performance, yet some of these same technological advances have arguably contributed to societal ills such as climate change and/or environmental degradation.  Relatedly, technological advances and innovations give rise to opportunities in the creation of new firms and career paths, yet the growing demand for technically skilled workers along with the automation of low-skill tasks has an unintended consequence of exacerbating economic inequality.  In our academic profession, advances in IT support new online education delivery models that compete with more traditional campus-based offering.  While this innovation has the potential to create a more inclusive student body, there are implications for the profession as it expands the responsibilities of the professoriate and may limit experiential learning. Understanding how organizations are innovating and adapting to this changing technological landscape is an important thematic topic for investigation by TIM scholars. Given the scope of these changes, and in-line with the conference theme, holistic, cross-disciplinary, multi-method studies that characterize the problems faced, highlight mechanisms underlying current conditions, and identify actionable solutions are needed.   

We welcome paper and symposium submissions related to these topics, new and emerging topics, as well as established topics that have previously been represented in the TIM program. In the past, major topics areas have included Adaptation and Change, Innovation Strategy, New Product Development, Open Innovation, Microfoundations of Innovation, Innovation & Technology Policy, New Market Emergence, Knowledge Management, Technology Platforms and Ecosystems, Technology Entrepreneurship, Intellectual Property Strategies, Innovation and Organizational Forms.

Because TIM is cross-disciplinary, papers or symposia that relate to the domains of other divisions are encouraged. These submissions may become candidates for cross-divisional sessions.  As participants in our academic field come from a wide range of disciplines and draw from a rich array of theoretical and empirical research paradigms, we enter this complex domain in the spirit of dialogue and debate, seeking deeper understanding. Our goal is to present paper sessions and symposia that are as diverse, creative and engaging as our membership.

The deadline for submissions is 14 January 2020 at 5:00 PM ET (NY Time).  If you submit a paper, we also expect you to sign up to review.  Remember that you need to renew your reviewer registration every year.

 Awards: TIM offers a number of awards:

Best Paper Award.  Award for the paper with the most significant contribution to TIM in the refereed scholarly program.

Best Student Paper Award. Award for the best student paper in the refereed scholarly program.  To be eligible for the best student paper award, the student must be the lead author or sole author, and this should be clearly indicated on the title page of the paper. Papers considered for the Best Student Paper Award can also be considered for the TIM Division Best Paper Award.

Best Reviewer Awards. Awards for reviewers who provide reviews that are exceptionally thorough, insightful, and helpful.
