Driving Goal 1: Connecting our Community

DRIVING GOAL 1     /     DRIVING GOAL 2     /     DRIVING GOAL 3     /     DRIVING GOAL 4

AOM is connecting members of the global management and organization community with one another and with external audiences through an unparalleled portfolio of engagement opportunities that transcend technological and geographic boundaries.

What does that mean for our worldwide membership?

Our Annual Meeting is the world's largest forum devoted to management scholarship and education. To enable scholars with the best practical input on globally relevant management teaching, AOM offers the Teaching and Learning Conference at the Annual Meeting.

In 2018, AOM held two Specialized Conferences, where scholars from around the world exchanged ideas and networked in smaller settings at locations outside of North America. To highlight the scholarly research and collaboration emanating from our Specialized Conference Initiative, AOM produces Global Proceedings as the central repository for the scholarly outputs of each new conference.

In addition to reaching our global membership through Specialized Conferences and workshops, we are thrilled to take the Annual Meeting to Copenhagen, Denmark, in 2025.

78th Annual Meeting

The 78th Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management took place in Chicago, Illinois, USA, from August 10-14, 2018. This year’s theme, “Improving Lives,” raised issues of theoretical, empirical, and practical importance across the full range of Academy divisions, interest groups, and stakeholders, and posed the principal question: How can organizations contribute to the betterment of society through elevating the health and well-being of those who live in it?

New in 2018 was the debut of the Resource Center, providing a one-stop shop for attendees to ask questions about registration, membership, placement services, program support, and general information. Also introduced in Chicago was the Submission Center, which supported access to submission reviews and allowed submitters to manage their papers. To enhance members’ online experience at the Meeting, redesigned Technology Centers included more seating and charging capabilities.

From Start-up to Scale-up: Coping with Organizational Challenges in a Volatile Business Environment

December 17-19, 2018

Tel Aviv, Israel

The Specialized Conference From Start-up to Scale-up: Coping with Organizational Challenges in a Volatile Business Environment featured research on the unique organizational challenges of start-up firms and entrepreneurial corporations that seek to grow within and beyond their established markets. Scholars from all management disciplines, as well as industry experts, strategists, entrepreneurs, venture capital experts, and policy makers were invited to participate in what proved to be a stimulating meeting in Israel, "The Startup Nation."

The Call for Submissions elicited 342 proposals from 49 countries and resulted in a dynamic mix of traditional and roundtable paper sessions, symposia, a doctoral consortium, professional development workshops, and journal paper development workshops from Academy of Management Discoveries and Academy of Management Perspectives. The conference also featured integrated panels from scholars and practitioners in the energy and healthcare sectors; keynote presentations; and a stirring debate featuring participants from industry, government, media, and academia.

The local organizing team, university collaborators (Tel Aviv University, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Technion - Israel Institute of Technology) and supporting divisions (Entrepreneurship (ENT), International Management (IM), Organizational Behavior (OB), Organization and Management Theory (OMT), Strategic Management (STR), and Technology and Innovation Management (TIM)) created a unique and meaningful conference experience that attracted 349 conference attendees from 32 countries.

AOM2025 takes the Academy to Copenhagen

In 2018, the Academy of Management announced that the 2025 Annual Meeting will be held in Copenhagen, Denmark! After narrowing down a wide array of locations and gathering input from members, the Board of Governors selected Copenhagen as the location for AOM's first Annual Meeting outside of North America. The selection of Copenhagen was informed by a commissioned study to identify potentially viable cities (within and outside of North America) that could accommodate the AOM's unique meeting requirements.
